Myth #1: Semaglutide is a New and Untested Drug

Context:

Semaglutide (the active ingredient in Ozempic® and Wegovy®) was first examined in clinical trials in the early 2010's as a treatment for Diabetes. The earliest studies focused on measuring the drug's safety, and pharmacodynamics. In 2012, Phase 2 clinical trials examined the efficacy and optimal dosages needed to manage blood sugar levels. Then, Phase 3 clinical trials in 2013 involved thousands of people, and found evidence for a variety of benefits beyond blood sugar management, including weight loss. This led to an FDA approval for Semaglutide (under the brand name Wegovy®) for weight loss on June 4, 2021.

Myth #2: Semaglutide is Only for Severely Obese People

Context:

Any person who is considered medically overweight (having a BMI of 27 or greater) and has at least one weight-related health condition such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, or dyslipidemia can be considered eligible to qualify for an Ozempic®, Wegovy®, or non-branded Compounded Semaglutide prescription for weight loss. A doctor will screen the patient for circumstances that exclude a patient such as an allergy to Semaglutide or family histories of specific diseases.

Myth #3: Semaglutide has Dangerous, Severe Side Effects

While all medications have potential side effects, the weight loss medications available on the market have been thoroughly tested and are deemed safe when used under medical supervision. The most common side effects are gastrointestinal in nature and include nausea, constipation, and indigestion. Most side effects fade over time, and are easily treatable in the short term with other safe, commonly used medications. Like all medications, a healthcare professional should monitor how your body responds to it, and adjust dosage as necessary.

Myth #4: Ozempic® is Prohibitively Expensive

While it's true that name brand drugs like Ozempic® can cost over $1,000 per month, those are NOT the only available options for clinically proven weight loss drugs. Compounded Semaglutide is a newly available pharmaceutical that uses the SAME active ingredient as Ozempic® and Wegovy®, but does not have the pricy brand name attached to it. The drug has the same clinical efficacy for weight loss, and the same limited side effect profile, except costs only a third of the price. This is how ordinary people have been able to get their hands on what was once seen as a "celebrity weight loss hack."

Myth #5: Weight Loss Medication Requires a Prescription
